🦋 Personality

Option 1: Answer the following questions. Elaborate on the answer, especially your characters thoughts and feelings surrounding the answer. For Canon Characters, you can choose four questions. For Original Characters, you will need to choose six questions. Keep the word count to 150-400 per question.
  1. Has your character always believed in magic? Do they have something influencing their perspective on the supernatural/metaphysical/spiritual from their past? How do they feel about magic?

  2. Magic is simply a fact of the world, something you're born with or without, the Gift of the gods given at their inscrutable whims. Many of Kel's friends and heroes are mages, but Kel was born without it, and she doesn't find herself lacking. Really, it all seems like a lot of fuss and trouble to her; aside from a few bouts of envy that she can't use healing magic, she can scarcely imagine what she would do with magical powers if she did have them. She's happy with her weapons and her sweat and her strategies, things she understands.

Magic has mended her broken bones and guaranteed the safety of her drinking water; it's been an invaluable tool on the battlefield, whenever she's had mages on her side. It's also been an invaluable tool for her enemies. How lucky that mages can be cut down just like anybody else, so long as you don't get caught up in their song and dance.

The spiritual is perhaps harder for her to work around, for all that the gods are more distant than the magic casually weaved into her everyday life. Like most sensible people, Kel was brought up with a healthy respect for both the broadly recognized pantheon and the smaller gods associated with particular locales. Give them their due offerings, and pray to them, yes--but it's silly to think they're actually looking in on every little trial and triumph. You wouldn't want them to interfere too much anyway; the god-touched never live quiet lives.

For her part, Kel is relieved to be done with her one god-given task, in killing the necromancer Blayce. No more of that, please. She has her own work to do.

  3. If your character could ask for one wish, and it's going to be magically granted without any consequence, what will it be and why?

  4. Pardons for herself and for those who followed her when she broke her oath to the Crown in order to rescue the refugees that had been in her care and kill the mage that planned to use them in necromancy. If forced to whittle the request down, she'd give up her own pardon for the rest--but really, she would like to go home and live freely now that Blayce is dead.

Kel knew the consequences of treason when she chose to commit it, and she's never been one to shirk punishment. She wouldn't ask for any unreasonable exceptions--not for her own sake, anyway. But pardons can be issued even in the normal course of things, and there are so many more lives than her own tangled up in her choices now. They all made their own choices as well in following her, it's true, but none of them would have thrown their lives to the wind if Kel hadn't led the way. This is a danger she put them in, and she can see no way to save them on her own. All that leaves her is a heavy guilt, and a grim resignation to whatever punishment the law will see fit to give them in trial.

If she can pray for mercy from the law for all of them, making a wish is surely above board too.

  5. If there's one person your character would follow to another realm, who would it be and why? If there's no one, state that and explain why.

  6. Kel would follow a stray cat straight into hell if she thought she could do it any good there, and if there were nobody she would hurt by leaving.

No, there is no one person Kel would follow to another realm, because she would follow just about anybody if she thought they needed her. Or, she would want to--but would that mean abandoning all the other people she must also protect? That's the problem with honor and duty all of that purehearted hero nonsense, isn't it? The more responsibility you take on, the further you spread out your love and loyalty, the more you're faced with terrible choices. Who needs Kel the most? Where can she be the most useful, given her limited abilities as one single, simple human? What must she sacrifice?

Who would it most break her heart to lose? That cannot factor into the decision--and what a relief, to have one less factor to consider. Kel has chosen a life of service, after all, and she could have chosen no differently. This is all she knows how to be, all she wants to be. Her unwavering sense of duty to her people–whoever they are, wherever they are, and whatever they feel about her–is what carries her through everything. Allegiance to just one person above all others is an impossible luxury and a terrifying thought.

  7. What is your character's most outstanding personality trait, and why?

  8. Kel is steady--in her demeanor, in her discipline, in her convictions. She walks through life with clear eyes and a solid focus on her goals.

At her best, Kel's thoughts follow quick, logical paths and she deals fairly with everyone she meets; even at her worst she doesn’t panic, and she doesn’t rise to bait. It isn't that she doesn't get angry--she does that quite a bit, actually. Her temper is tightly contained, the grip loosened only very occasionally with those she can trust--and immediately regretted even then. She always finds her cool again, usually before anyone has noticed she lost it.

The daughter of diplomats, Kel was raised abroad in the intense, high-pressure environment of the Yamani imperial court. This taught her to manage her emotions–and especially her expressions-from a very young age, even under extreme stress. These skills in stoicism were cemented when she began training for knighthood as the sole girl in a deeply misogynistic environment. Though she’s loosened up a lot over the years as she’s made friends and found her place in the world, as an adult she’s still very contained, staying collected and calculated whether she’s fighting monsters or having slurs hurled at her. When she actually is upset, those feelings are either funneled into a hard focus on the most immediate practical response (which might actually be a fight! but more often not), or set aside for a time they won’t be in the way. You know, whenever that is. If the pain just sits in her chest forever that's probably fine too, what can you do, right?

For all the ugliness she encounters--hopeless cycles of poverty and violence, and a world that often spits in her face when she shows up to help--Kel doesn't allow herself to wallow in despair or become spiteful. Kel knows in her heart what is right and good and fair, and she is determined to act accordingly, or as best as anybody can. She may not have the imagination to change the systems that cause so much suffering, but she can step in when she sees abuse. How wonderfully simple.
